Head to the Museo de Arte Español Enrique Larreta. This Spanish Art Museum decorated as a Spanish renaissance palace and surrounded by a unique Spanish Muslim garden, was the home of author Enrique Larreta. His extensive collection of sculptures, paintings and furniture mostly from the Renaissance and Baroque periods can be appreciated in this ornamented historical landmark and there is also a temporary exhibit on the Tree of Life being showcased. A special exhibit of records and music scores is being displayed at the Museo Casa Carlos Gardel until February. Jean Jaures 735, Abasto. 4964-2015.
Later on head to the Centro Cultural Konex for a unique experience of the senses at the Dialogo en la Oscuridad exhibit in which the audience is guided through a series of recreated situations, such as shopping or traveling in a boat, in total darkness. One of the architectural landmarks of the city is the famous Palacio Barolo. Construction of this regal building full of references to poet Dante Alighieri began in 1919 for what was to be the tallest structure in Latin America. Guided tours are available Mondays and Thursdays from 4pm to 7pm and evening guided tours on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8pm and Thursdays at 8.30pm includes tasting of an awarded wine and a national delicacy. Take a day trip to the local bakery, butcher shop and market where Teresita will show you all the traditional foods and ingredients. Afterwards go back to her home and learn to make empanadas before having a delicious gourmet 4-course meal with wine pairings! More on Teresita’s culinary tour here.

Open on New Year in Buenos Aires

During New Years many of the local attractions close. We put together a list of some of the places that will remain open (other than many of the city restaurants, cafes and bars).
-The MALBA museum will be open on the 31st from midday-6pm. City museums run by the government (find a list here) will also remain open on Saturday the 31st of December from 10am-7pm. Avenida Figueroa Alcorta 3415, Recoleta. 4808-6500.
-Palacio Barolo will be offering a nocturnal tour on the 31st finishing at their lighthouse for a midnight toast under the spark of fireworks. The high altitude makes it an ideal viewing spot of the city skies. Cost for the tour is 50 USD/ person and includes midnight drinks and snacks as well as a bilingual tour guide. -The ecological reserve in Puerto Madero will be open all weekend from 8am-6pm. Please note that if it should rain it will remain closed. Av. Tristán Achával Rodríguez 1550 Costanera Sur. 4893-1640/1580
-The Buque Museo Fragata in Puerto Madero is a frigate commissioned by the navy in 1898 to be used as a training vessel. It will be open all weekend on its regular timetable from 10am to 7pm for visitors to roam on the deck and check out the memorabilia displayed. It will remain closed in the case of rain. -The Recoleta Cemetery will be open all weekend on its regular timetable from 7am-5.45.
-The San Telmo antique market will also remain open this Sunday as usual, all though it may be scanter of exhibitors.
-On the 1st of January at 4pm the monthly “Masa Critica” will kick off from the Obelisco. This event gathers bike riders once a month to ride around the city in thus promoting the use of bicycles as transport. If you would like to join you can rent a bike for 85 pesos from the 31st Dec-2nd Jan at Bici Naranja. They will be open on the 31st until 2pm and will also be offering a city tour on the 1st, also at 4pm. for 145 pesos. More information on Bici Naranja here.
-In the evening of the 1st starting at 9.30pm Notorious will be offering a live music tribute to Django Reinhardt and swing music. Callao 966, Palermo. 4813-6888.
Transport
Transport on New Year´s Eve can be complicated. Your best bet is to plan in advance.
- Keep in mind that radio taxis will work until 8pm-10pm on the 31st depending on the company, and will start up again on the 1st at approximately 6am.
- Trains will be working until 10pm on the 31st and resuming their service at approximately 6am.
- Subways will qork on Saturday the 31st from 5am-11pm, and on Sunday the 1st of Jan from 8am-10pm.
- Buses will be the only transport that will be operating all night long although with a low frequency (every 20 min. Approximately).

Start the week by paying a visit to the Carlos Gardel Museum and learn everything there is to know about the famous tango legend. If you stay until 6.30 pm you can watch some live tango.
The Buenos Aires Tango Queer Festival also starts today and will be hosting workshops, classes and dance shows throughout the week. More information here.
In the evening head to La Cigale to participate in the monthly Pub Quiz (in English) where you can meet people and maybe win something!

Explore the Tres de Febrero parks in Palermo. Between Av. Libertador and Lugones, and extending from Av. Casares in Palermo to La Pampa in Belgrano, this group of parks is composed of 25ha made up of 15 public parks and 21 private sport clubs and includes the “Rosedal”, an extensive rose garden, the Sivori Museum, the Planetarium and the Japanese Gardens. Throughout November there is a photography exhibit about the Mayas at the Rosedal.
In the evening head for a special dinner at Unik, a newcomer to the Palermo scene which offers a combination of top quality gourmet dining and modern design.

Inside a beautiful French style building you will find The Decorative Art Museum, which showcases a collection of local and foreign objects and furniture. The building in itself makes the museum well worth the visit and the cafe in the courtyard is a lovely place for an afternoon stop.

Aiming to promote the urban art scene in Buenos Aires Graffitimundo offers an off the beaten path tour of the city streets. Group tours are offered every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday starting at 3pm for those interested in learning more about the local street art and the political and social context that is behind it. Take a day trip to, La Campiña, a 25 year old orange farm in the Buenos Aires town of San Pedro owned by a couple who wished to turn their love for the land into their life. Visits include a tour of the orange plantation (with the added joy of the orange blossoms perfume in the spring), of the selection process, of a dovecot, jam making area, storage and the restaurant. Pop Diva Britney Spears stops by Buenos Aires on her Femme Fatale World Tour to put on one of her famous shows at Estadio Unico de La Plata on Sunday 20th of November. Tickets here.

Buenos Aires, vereda de libros (sidewalks of books) will be taking place this week throughout the city where bookshops will be displaying their material on the sidewalks of the City. To kick off the event there will be an experimental reading with music held at the Biblioteca Ricardo Güiraldes at 2.30pm, and a recycling activity at 4pm at the Biblioteca Martín del Barco Centenera, where sculptures will be made from discarded paper and cardboard.
In the evening don’t miss out on La Bomba del Tiempo, a percussion orchestra that has become one of the local absolute musts. For some great post dancing pizza, head to nearby Los Cocos and order a fugazetta pizza, an onion and mozzarella local specialty.

If your planning to visit the city center to see the obelisco, or to take a tour of the Colon Theatre, head to the Palacio de Aguas Corrientes (palace of running waters) on Cordoba Avenue and Riobamba first. Originally built as a disguise for a water tower meant to provide clean drinking water to the people after the 1877 outbreak of yellow fever, the stunning palace now works as Aguas Argentinas (the local water company) headquarters and also as a museum.
For a great gourmet lunch in the nearby area head to Restó, just 5 blocks away from the Palace.
In the evening the Canadian group Broken Social Scene will be playing their new album “Forgiveness Rock Record” at La Trastienda.

Head to the Museo de Arte Hispano Americano where an impressive display of antique and religious objects, furniture, silver, and paintings dating back to the 1700´s are sure to take you back to a key historic moment where two very different cultures collided to define what South America is today. Additionally you can visit the altar of the dead which has been temporarily set up to celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead.

Sunday won’t offer much in terms of activities as it is Election Day, so it is a good chance to walk around the city to see architectural landmarks such as the Puente de la Mujer and the Cavannagh building. Restaurants will be open although alcohol will not be served on Saturday evening or Sunday.
