The Buenos Aires Tango Championship will be carried out from the 4th to the 15th of May with the grand finale taking place at the Usina del Arte. More information will be available here closer to date.

The MNBA in Recoleta is showcasing a site specific work by renowned Argentine contemporary artist Jorge Macchi that complements the artist’s exhibits at the MALBA and Di Tella institute. On the 3rd of May, the museum is also inaugurating a new exhibit of Mexican muralists Siqueiros, Rivera, and Orozco’s works.

El MNBA en Recoleta tiene en exposición una instalación de Jorge Macchi que complementa las muestras del mismo artista en el MALBA y en el Instituto Di Tella. El 3 de mayo, el museo también inaugura una muestra de la obra de los muralistas mejicanos Siqueiros, Rivera y Orozco.

The MALBA in Palermo is showcasing a collection of Jorge Macchi’s work until the end of May, alongside a photography exhibit of Claudia Andujar’s work, and a temporary showcase of Juan Tessi’s paintings.

The MAMBA in San Telmo is featuring Marta Minujin’s famous La Menesunda until the 22nd of May.

Fundación PROA in La Boca, in collaboration with the National Museum of 21st Century Arts (MAXII) is displaying Arte en Escena, an exhibit that explores connections between art and theatre in terms of the spatial aspects of staging.

Once With Me- A cross disciplinary contemporary dance performance choreographed by Pam Tanowitz will take place at the Faena Arts Center in Puerto Madero on the 17th, 18th, 19th of May.

Once with me es una puesta de danza contemporánea interdisciplinaria cuya coreografía fue diseñada por Pam Tanowitz y se lleva a cabo en el Faena Arts Center en Puerto Madero del 17 al 19 de mayo.

The Colón Theatre will be in full swing during May and will stage two operas: Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, and, an experimental staging of Argentine composer Gandini’s operas at the direction of Michal Znaniecki. The theatre will also be holding various concerts. The full May program is available here.

Kick off the month at the Ateneo Grand Splendid bookstore, considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world, and read something enticing over a cup of coffee. Av. Santa Fe 1860, Recoleta.

In the evening, stop by Centro Cultural Konex where famous percussion group, La Bomba del Tiempo, will be carrying out their Monday show starting at 7pm. Sarmiento 3151, Almagro.

Tuesday

Volatil felicidad (Fleeting Happiness) is the new photography exhibit taking place at Parque de la Memoria, which gathers a collection of images from Argentina in the nineties. Rafael Obligado 6745, Costanera.

In the evening, at 8pm, Russian pianist Evgeni Kissin will be staging a live concert at the Colón Theatre. Tickets here.

One of the city’s architectural landmarks is the famous Palacio Barolo, full of references to poet Dante Alighieri. Guided tours take place from 4pm to 7pm and evening guided tours at 8.30pm include tasting of an awarded wine and a national delicacy. Av. de Mayo 1370, downtown.

At 7pm, head to La Trastienda for their Brazilian Wednesday event, Miércoles Carinhosos, and dance all the way past midnight. Balcarce 460, San Telmo.

The biggest art fair of Latin America kicks off its four day marathon on Thursday promising for a weekend full of creative surprises. Find more information here.

In the evening, the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra and Pipa Gao Hong as a soloist will be presenting Sang Keije’s Lovers’ Besieged, amongst other classical pieces at the Colón Theatre. Tickets here.

Take one of FotoRuta’s Street Scape tours and learn some photography tips while discovering the city from a different angle. More information here.

In the evening, French film fans can catch a screening of Godard’s masterpiece Contempt at 7.30 and 10pm at the Teatro San Martín. Av. Corrientes 1530, Downtown.

Arte BA 2013

The biggest art fair of the year will be taking place throughout the weekend featuring the both local and international galleries and mostly contemporary Latin American art. The displays include works by renowned local artists such as Kosice and Marta Minujín, new talents at the Barrio Joven that features the works of young artists, and international art represented by Argentine galleries at the U-Turn Project rooms. Also, the Petrobras Prize will be awarded to five of four hundred Argentine artists who submitted works under the theme of exile. Finally, artists Alexander Wagner, Marcelo Cidade, Guillermo Peters, Roberto Winter, Sophie Erlund and Daniel Jackson will also be present at ArteBA. More information here.

The fair is open until the 27th of May from 1pm to 9pm at La Rural. Tickets are 70 pesos and can be purchased online here.

This Week in Buenos Aires

The 9th National Dance Championship, the Quilmes Rock Festival, the International Human Rights Film Festival, Marta Minujin’s art installation, a Tower of Babel made of books, and Arte BA, the country’s most important art fair all take place this week.

Monday:

The Palermo area is great to walk around and explore. Small cafes, great and unexpected stores by independent designers and contemporary galleries such as Braga Mendez Gallery, Milo Locket art space  and Galeria Foster Catena  are well worth visiting.

In the evening don’t miss out on La Bomba del Tiempo a percussion orchestra that has become one of the local absolute musts.  For some great post dancing pizza, head to nearby Los Cocos and order a fugazetta pizza, an onion and mozzarella local specialty.

Robert Doisneau- Picasso et Francoise Gilot

Visit French Robert Doisneau’s photography exhibition at the Centro Cultural Recoleta, which is half a block away from the famous must see cemetery. For a sweet treat and some warm afternoon tea, head to close by Sirop Folie.

In the evening head to La Viruta to watch some of the local dance talents as they compete in the 9th city dance competition to the sound of melodious milongas and soulful tangos.

Arte BA is a contemporary art fair hosted every year in Buenos Aires and showcasing some of the most talented and prestigious artists of today’s scene.  Also in the area are the Botanical Gardens and Zoo.

In the evening Jack Johnson plays in the Quilmes Rock Festival, (tickets here), Michael Bolton plays in Luna Park (tickets here) and Motley Crue present themselves in Estadio Malvinas Argentinas (tickets here).

Visit the city’s museum headquarters housed in a legendary building once belonging to the Munich Brewery. The museum, in Puerto Madero and close to the ecologic reserve, is showcasing the brewery’s vintage advertisements from 1920’s-1957.

In the evening Jamiroquai will get the crowds revved up for the Quilmes Rock Festival. Another great option is Le Bar’s Pompeya party.

Take a day trip to the San Isidro neighborhood in the outskirts of the city and visit Quinta Los Ombues, one of the oldest homestead in the city where a small historical museum is displayed overlooking a beautiful viewpoint of San Isidro. Close by is the San Isidro cathedral and an artisans fair in a shaded park. Also in San Isidro is the Casa de Victoria OCampo well worth visiting and having some tea with scones in.

On Saturday evening Tricky is presenting his tenth album “Mixed Race” at 7pm in Groove.  Av. Sta Fe 4389, Palermo. Tickets here.

On Sunday evening the dance competition closes with a milonga at the corner of Av. San Juan and Av. Boedo.
