Buenos Aires Art Spree

Several artistic events will be taking place next week in Buenos Aires to wrap up May. The most well known is the annual arteBA fair, the biggest art fair in Latin America that will take place from May 24th to May 27th in La Rural, in Palermo. This year,  the  new FACA art fair  will also be taking place parallel to arteBA from the 25th to the 28th at the Palermo racetracks with food trucks, a beer lounge and DJ’s.

As if two art fairs in one week weren’t enough, the FAENA Arts Center will be showcasing a selection of works from the Biennale of Moving Things from the 23rd to the 30th of May. Also, the first Gallery Day event, taking place in La Boca, San Telmo and Barracas will be carried out on the 20th of May from 3-7pm.

La próxima semana, la ciudad se despide de mayo con un festín artístico en el que participa toda la movida del arte local. Para empezar, arteBA, la feria de arte más grande de latinoamérica, inaugura el 24 de mayo y se lleva a cabo hasta el 27 en La Rural en Palermo. En simultáneo, la nueva Feria de Arte Contemporáneo (FACA) abre sus puertas el 25 hasta el 28 en el Hipódromo de Palermo donde además habrán food trucks, patio cervecero y DJ’s. 

Como si fuera poco, se suma también una muestra con una selección de obras de la Biennale of Moving Images de Génova en el FAENA Arts Center del 23 al 30 de Mayo. Además, el 20 de mayo se lleva a cabo el primer Gallery Day con circuito en La Boca, San Telmo y Barracas.

At 2pm, stop by the Obelisk where a special ice-cream tasting event will take place, in which local ice cream makers will give a live demonstration on how it’s done.

Later on, at 8pm, the Buenos Aires Philharmonica will be playing at the Usina del Arte in La Boca. Agustín Caffarena 1, La Boca.

It’s also La Noche de las Disquerías (Record Shop Night), so there will be lots of live music and related activities around the city from 6pm onwards.

A day trip to Tigre is a must while you’re in Buenos Aires. You can try a water sport, stop by the Mercado de Frutos where you can purchase local goods, go on a rollercoaster ride, and even place your bets at the local Casino. Explore on your own or try a tour!

Head to the Ecological Reserve behind Puerto Madero and look for the stunning monument La Fuente de las Nereidas which depicts the birth of Venus, and was sculpted by Lola Mora, one of Argentina’s most renowned women artists.

You can also stop by the Palermo Rosedal where you can rent paddle boats to cruise the small lake alongside the ducks, and visit the Sivori Museum, which offers free tours in English and German on Saturdays at 3pm and 5pm! Av. Infanta Isabel 555, Palermo.

Joan Miró at Usina del Arte

A new retrospective of Catalan artist Joan Miró has recently been inaugurated at La Usina del Arte in La Boca, and will be taking place until the 20th of December. The exhibition, which commemorates the 120th anniversary of the artist’s birth, showcases 56 original pieces including xylographs, lithographs and illustrations, amongst others.  There are also seminars and talks about twentieth century art that are taking place as part of the event.

The exhibit is open from Tuesday to Friday from midday to 6pm and on weekends from 11am to 8pm. Tickets are 20 pesos. Agustín Caffarena 1, and Pedro de Mendoza, La Boca.

Buenos Aires through Artists’ Eyes

Fundación PROA in La Boca recently inaugurated a new exhibit featuring different representations of Buenos Aires as seen through artists’ eyes. The showcase, which includes photographs, films,  installations, paintings and more,  is an excellent way to get to know different aspects of this bustling lively city.

The exhibition is divided into four parts: the first, features different film fragments that portray the city’s independence and constant rhythmic pulse; the second, deals has the obelisk as its theme and includes photography by the likes of Grete Stern, Horacio Coppola and Juan di Sandro, amongst others, and also, the preparatory sketches and designs of the monument by Alberto Prebisch as well as different art objects inspired by the famous landmark; the third part of the exhibit deals with themes of poverty and alienation, and political and socio-economic aspects; finally, the fourth presents us with a vision for the future.

The exhibit is open until the 27th of October from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 to 7pm. Av. Pedro de Mendoza 1929, La Boca.

New Contemporary Art Exhibit at Fundación PROA

Fundación PROA in La Boca inaugurated a new exhibit this past weekend featuring contemporary art from the nineties to today. The exhibition showcases Gustavo Bruzzone’s private collection of nineties art, Esteban Tedesco’s collection of the early 2000’s and Alejandro Ikonicoff’s collection of works from the last five years.

The art center also inaugurated a collective art installation by Esteban Álvarez, Pablo Rosales and Cristina Schiavi in which the artists incorporated the traditional La Boca facade aesthetic to Fundación Proa’s architecture.

Harun Farocki at Fundación Proa

Fundación PROA in La Boca has recently inaugurated a new exhibition of renowned German video artist and filmmaker Harun Farocki. The exhibit consists of five  video installations and screenings of his three latest films.

Farocki´s cinematographic universe is centered on the analysis of images produced by contemporary society and the forms of power involved in their production, exhibition and consumption.  Eye/Machine II (2002), for example, examines the role of images and media in the construction of war, whilst Workers Leaving the Factory in Eleven Decades shows different representations of workers throughout film history.

Buenos Aires Jazz Festival

The Buenos Aires Jazz Festival will be taking place until the 26th of November, promising for a music filled long weekend. The event, which will feature both local and international acts, will also include special classes by international artists, film screenings and a photography exhibit.

Concerts are divided into seven different sections:

–       The international acts section will take place at the Usina del Arte in La Boca and in the Teatro Regio downtown. It will feature live acts by the Alain Jean-Marié Trio/ Cajanegra, Agustín Moya Quinteto / Alain Jean-Marie Solopiano, Dúo Ralph Towner – Javier Girotto / Kirk Lightsey Solopiano, Marc Ducret Trío / Ramon Fossati Glowing Trío, John Hollenbeck Quintet / Kirk Lightsey Trío, and Banda Mantiqueira.

–       The outdoor shows section will feature free shows on the outdoor terrace of the Centro Cultural Recoleta and the Anfiteatro Parque Centenario.

–       The jazzology section will also take place at the Centro Cultural Recoleta and features a jazz program directed by Carlos Inzillo who has brought different artists together to promote the local jazz scene.

–       There will also be an unplugged section that will feature free concerts at the Centro Cultural Recoelta’s El Aleph auditorium.

–       Every evening staring at 11.30pm there will be a jam session at La Trastienda with renowned local jazz musician Gillespi.

–       The special projects section will also take place in La Trastienda and will feature free concerts presenting new records and concepts by different artists.

–       Finally, Cruces is the section destined to bringing local and international artists together on the same stage. Upcoming concerts taking place at Cafe Vinilo and Notorious include: Danny Grissett & Jeanfrançois Prins + Juan Manuel Bayón & Luciano Ruggieri, Ugonna Okegwo, Adam Cruz & Mark Aanderud + Alejandro Demogli & Mariano Loiácono, Louis Winsberg + Ezequiel Dutil, Hernán Mandelman & Sophie Lüssi, Gilles Naturel & Philippe Soirat + Tomás Fraga & Manuel Fraga, David Gilmore & Agustín Moya + Mariano Sivori & Tomas Babjaczuk, Alfio Origlio, Jérôme Regard & Raimundo Santander + Hernán Hecht, Eric Echampard, Bruno Chevillion & Joel Holmes + Luis Nacht, and Judy Niemack & Paula Shocron Trío.

The Centro Cultural Recoleta will also feature free film screenings and a photography exhibit. Additionally, there will be special workshops and classes offered by some of the international artists who have been invited to the event.

Giacometti Exhibit at Fundación PROA

Alberto Giacometti, despite his Italian last name, was a renowned Swiss surrealist sculptor and painter. His elongated representations of the human body were according to the artist sculptures of the shadows bodies cast. The elegant and expressive figures he created will be on display in Buenos Aires at the Fundación PROA in La Boca from the 13th of October until the 9th of January.

The exhibit will feature over 130 of his pieces which range from his initial works in Switzerland, those he did under the influence of Cezanne and African art, and to his more well known sculptures and paintings from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s in which his representation of heads and lanky figures can be appreciated.
