3 Alternative Delta Tours

tigre

PH: Miguel Vieira

The hot summer days are ideal for some riverside fun and the Paraná Delta in Tigre is well worth knowing. Below are our 3 picks of alternative tours in the area:

Bandoneon a Bordo: This tour company takes you out on a boat where you get to enjoy small intimate tango shows. They offer day trips, night journeys or 2-day expeditions and are perfect if you want to kick back and relax as you discover the region.

Selknam Canoes: If you would rather try a more dynamic exploration you can take a trip with Selknam canoes and paddle in a handcrafted wooden Canadian boat through the beautiful Tigre canals. They offer two-hour day trip tours, night tours and custom made tours.

Delta Unplugged: If you want to combine some sailing with homemade meals by a swiss chef and nutritionist, then Delta unplugged is for you. These tours are led by a couple who welcome you first to their home for a homemade breakfast and then take you out to explore the canals whilst tempting you with some more food on the way.

We Recommend: Sudeste Kayak Tours

Now that the weather is warmer and that the flowers are in full bloom, it’s the perfect time to get to know the outdoorsy side of Buenos Aires, and a Tigre kayak outing to experience the delta from the waterfront should definitely be on your list of musts, if it already isn’t!

sudeste1

Sudeste, in reference to the South East winds which make the tides grow, and also to an Haroldo Conti novel, is run by the delta savvy Martin Schoo, and offers the chance to go kayaking in either half day or full day tailored excursions that include equipment, instructions, and a mate, fruit and pastry rest in the shade after the half day, or an asado if you’re willing to go the whole way. Plus, you get a lot of information about the unique geography of the river estuary, and some interesting anecdotes that Martin can share with you about living in this savage habitat. Sudeste also offers night tours, which is perfect for full moon lovers and the more adventurous lot.

fogon

Recommendations include that you go on a weekday, when it is not so crowded, that you take sunscreen and mosquito repellent, that you wear something comfortable and fresh, and that you take a spare dry change of clothes for the return. Requirements are few, no previous rowing experience is necessary, but you do need to know how to swim and to have an overall good fitness level.

For more information and maps of paddling areas go to Sudeste’s webpage here, follow them on Facebook here, or contact them directly at martin@sudeste-kayak.com.ar,   (+5411) 15 38 604018.

Sunny Side Up: Outdoor Adventures in Buenos Aires

río

The forecast says the warm sunny weather will continue for the following ten days, and maybe more with a premature spring in the air. Besides enjoying some garden lounging and late night drinking in the bustling Palermo area, here are four alternative activities for some sunny day adventures too!

Argentina Polo Day: At just 45 minutes away from the city center, this is a great spot to relax outside where you can have an asado, watch a professional polo match, but best of all, learn how to play yourself! A unique activity well worth experiencing during your stay! More information here.

City Sailing Buenos Aires: The Rio de la Plata is as much part of the porteño identity as its shoreline and sailing is a great way to experience the city from another point of view while having some great fun as well. More information here.

Sudeste Kayak: The Tigre Delta is of course another must when the weather is nice, and the great thing about Sudeste Kayak is that they give you a chance to explore its little nooks and crannies while keeping the body moving. Plus, they have a great nocturnal tour that you don’t want to miss with the upcoming full moon. Find out more here.

Perú Beach Extreme Sports Center: Located in the residential Zona Norte area, and on the shore of the river banks, this laid back center has plenty of adventure options including kite surfing and climbing walls. Also, it is right in front of the Tren de la Costa Barrancas station that has a lovely little antique fair and the area is full of nice parrillas  with outdoor riverside seating. More information here.
